Insights from Song of Solomon 1

I have a new friend named Harriet over here. (I shall write more about her later.) Yesterday, we talked for a while and during one of our chats she encouraged me to read Song of Solomon. I generally stay clear of that book. It is definitely worth reading, but for me, it is difficult to read because of how much I struggle with mental purity. As she encouraged me to read that specific book, I knew that her reasoning for wanting me to read it wasn’t from her but from Papa. And so, I asked for Papa’s help to read it and began to read the first chapter or so. I was amazed at something that has never stood out before in the passage. It is so profound and yet simultaneously so subtle that I am not surprised that I missed it the other times that I read those same words.

This is the insight that I received. The Shulamite (the wife/the Ch) of the Beloved (the husband/Papa) thinks herself unworthy to have his love. Look at her words and listen to her pleas. She honestly thinks she is unworthy of such gracious and unmerited love. But does that stop her Lover? Nay, indeed not because her words don’t matter … only His love and his desire for her matters. Though her brothers have told her some harsh things and treated her not so kindly, the Beloved looks past all of that and only sees how much he desires her to shower his love upon her. It is grace. It is the grace that we are unworthy of each day … and yet, our past, our lack of love, our faults melt away in His eyes and become of no significance at all because He from the beginning simply has wanted to love us and call us His bride.
